In Abuja, Prof.
Chidi Odinkalu, former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC),
and Aisha Yesufu are some of the prominent Nigerians, who are being counted in
the #IStandWithNigeria protest at the Freedom Square, while in Lagos, Yemi
Adamolekun of the Enough is Enough Nigeria (EiEN), is also at the frontline.
Despite all attempts to stop the nationwide protests billed for today, Monday and tomorrow, Tuesday by Nigerians, to call attention to the parlous situation of the country, the event, has taken off successfully in Lagos and Abuja.
Meanwhile, Charles Oputa, alias
Charly Boy, who had pledged to “take the first bullet” and “spill his blood to
save the land,” is nowhere to be found yet, even as another group, which is in
support of the government, has also filed out to march in solidarity.
So far, all has been peaceful at
both ends, as the police have all retired to keeping watch over the protesters,
as no sign of hijack by hoodlums has been noticed, and no teargas or bullets
have been fired yet, some of the fears that have been raised against the
protest.
Reports say that the police, who
had closed the gate of the National Stadium, Surulere in Lagos, eventually gave
way for the officials to open them and allow protesters in, indicating that
there might be no further police offensive.
In fact, Commissioner of Police in
Lagos, Fatai Owoseni, was quoted by Premium
Times as saying that his men were only interested in
controlling the traffic around the area to ensure easy vehicular movement.
“If you look towards the gate you
will see that the gates have been opened and our men are just controlling the
flow of traffic and people, and my men are all stationed to douse any kind of
fear from the minds of the protesters,” Owoseni, was quoted to have said.
Nigerian music icon, Tuface
Idibia, had on Saturday, unilaterally cancelled the protest, citing the
likelihood of it being hijacked, by those he claimed were not in tune with the
ideals of the OneVoice
Nigeria, under which platform it was organised.
But the group, had pooh-poohed the
position and insisted on going ahead with the event, while the singer, had come
under intense criticisms of many Nigerians, who accused him of betraying the
cause.
