Tension Mounts In Rivers State As Gov. Wike Fires Paramount Ruler

Rumuepirikom community in Rivers State is in state of chaos over the sack of the paramount ruler has caused apprehension in. Elders and youths have scorned the decision of the governor.

Governor Wike has withdrawn the certificate of recognition of Eze Anthony Owabie as the paramount ruler of Rumuepirikom community.

Vanguard reports that Wike in a letter by the permanent secretary of ministry of chieftaincy and community affairs, Sir Samuel Ibemeru, dated September 16, said that the withdrawal of Eze Owabie as Nye-Nwe Eli Rumuepirikom was with immediate effect.

Though the spokesman for the embattled Eze, Mr. John Ihua, describes the action of the state government as illegal, the governor did not give reasons for his decision to remove the ruler, the letter noted that the action of the governor was in exercise of powers vested on him as the governor of the state.

Ihua described the purported sack of the paramount ruler as a move to damage the process of selection of a king in Rumuepirikom.

He also threatened, that his principal (Owabie) would approach the law court to seek the reverse of the governor’s order.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Government has unveiled activities to mark the 56th National Independence Day Celebration in the state. 

A statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Austin Tam-George,  said the activities would kick off today, September 23rd with a Juma’t Service at the Nigerian Air Force Base Mosque in Port Harcourt.

Tam-George said Sunday, September 25 would feature an Inter-denominational church service at St. Cyprian’s Church, Hospital Road, Port Harcourt.
